The Senior Home Care Alternative

The Senior Home Care Alternative has three goals:

  1. Develop a Senior Home Care Cooperative in the Chicago area;

  2. Assist the Senior Home Care Cooperative, once it has been established, to successfully implement this new model of care;

  3. Promote this model of the Cooperative and assist others in developing similar cooperatives.

NOTE: The Senior Home Care Alternative is a separate and distinct organization from the Senior Home Care Cooperative.

Additional Information

The Senior Home Care Alternative was started in 1996 to develop an alternative to a conventional nursing homes. The organization was founded by two nurses, Mary Signatur and Claudia George, who serve as its Executive Directors.

Mary and Claudia have worked extensively with older adults in both community-based and institutional settings. Mary worked for 11 years as a parish nurse and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Gerontology at Northeastern Illinois University. Claudia has worked as a nurse and as an instructor in nursing homes, and as a staff nurse in a geriatric rehabilitation facility. Both have also had personal experience with caregiving for elderly relatives.
